Dua Lipa closed out October with a red carpet look built entirely around commitment to a single idea: the hat as the whole outfit. At the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, she arrived in a piece from Chanel's Fall Winter 2026 Haute Couture collection and let an oversized headpiece do most of the talking.
The look
The two piece set paired a heavily textured tweed jacket with a matching midi skirt, finished with pointed toe pumps, a restrained base for what was really a hat first outfit. The black feathered hat itself was piled high and wide, threaded through with small lavender accents and set at an angle that read as deliberately dramatic rather than accidental.
A deliberate throwback
The overall effect leaned hard into a vintage reference, evoking a wealthy Parisian socialite from decades past heading to a society lunch rather than a modern awards show. It is a look that depends entirely on scale and attitude, the kind of hat that only works if the person wearing it commits fully rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Why the hat carried the whole look
Plenty of red carpet outfits build toward a single standout element, but few go as far as putting that much visual weight directly on top of the head. Lipa's choice paid off because everything else in the outfit, the tweed, the pumps, the restrained palette, stayed quiet enough to let the hat remain the obvious focal point rather than fighting it for attention.
